Porcelain Veneers: What You Should Know Before You Commit

You’ve probably seen them on TV. Maybe a celebrity got a whole new smile overnight. Or maybe you’ve scrolled through before-and-after photos online and thought, I want that. Porcelain veneers are incredible. We’ve seen them transform smiles in ways that still amaze us. But they’re also a big decision. And like any big decision, they work best when you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Let’s talk about what veneers actually are, what they can fix, and what you should think about before taking that step.

Porcelain Veneers: What You Should Know in Columbus, GA

What Veneers Actually Are

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of ceramic material. It bonds to the front of your tooth, and it looks just like natural enamel. We’re talking about the color, the translucency, even the way light reflects off it.

Dr. Caves designs each veneer individually. He doesn’t just slap on the same shape for everyone. He looks at your face, your smile, and your personality. Then he creates something that fits you specifically.

The goal isn’t to make you look like someone else. It’s to make you look like the best version of yourself.

What Veneers Could Fix

Veneers help solve a lot of problems that other treatments can’t:

  • Stains that won’t budge: Some people have deep discoloration from medications or genetics. Professional whitening won’t touch it. Veneers could cover it completely.
  • Chipped or worn teeth: Maybe you chipped a front tooth years ago and it’s been bothering you ever since. Maybe your teeth are naturally short. Veneers help restore the length and shape.
  • Gaps between teeth: Small spaces can be closed without braces. No brackets. No wires. Just a few well-designed veneers.
  • Crooked teeth: Veneers won’t fix major alignment issues. But for mild crowding or slight rotations, they can create the look of straight teeth in about two visits.
  • Misshapen teeth: Sometimes teeth just come in oddly shaped. Veneers work to smooth things out.

What Veneers Can’t Fix

Veneers aren’t for everyone. If you grind your teeth at night, veneers can crack or chip. We’ll usually recommend a nightguard first to protect your investment. If you have significant decay or gum disease, that needs to be addressed before we even think about veneers.

And if you want major orthodontic changes, braces or clear aligners are still the better option. We’re straight up about this. No point in veneering crooked teeth that really need to move.

The Process: What to Expect

Usually, we do veneers over two or three appointments.

  1. First, we talk about what you want to change. Dr. Caves examines your teeth and explains what’s realistic. No pressure. Just a conversation.
  2. After agreeing to treatment, we remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth. It’s tiny, about the thickness of a fingernail. We numb you first, so you won’t feel it. Then we take digital impressions using our scanner. No goopy trays. Just a quick wand that creates a 3D model.
  3. Next we send that model to our lab. They craft your custom veneers. It takes about two weeks. In the meantime, we place temporary veneers so you can see how things look and feel.
  4. Lastly, you come back, we remove the temporaries, and we bond your permanent veneers in place. Dr. Caves checks every detail: fit, color, and bite. When everything’s perfect, we cement them permanently.

How Long Do They Last?

With good care, ten to fifteen years is realistic. That means brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing us for regular cleanings. We also recommend avoiding things that could crack them, such as ice, hard candies, and pens you shouldn’t be chewing on anyway.

Veneers don’t stain like natural teeth do. So you can enjoy your coffee and red wine without worrying about discoloration. But the natural tooth behind the veneer can still get cavities. So flossing is still crucial.

The Financial Side of Things

We won’t dance around it. Veneers are an investment. They cost more than whitening or bonding because they take skill, artistry, and high-quality materials. We’ve seen cheaper veneers done elsewhere, and they don’t hold up. They break. They look fake. And they cause problems later.

We don’t want that for our patients. We’d rather do it right the first time.
