Dental inlays and onlays are an alternative to traditional metal fillings, being used on teeth that have moderate tooth cavities and/or decay. Dr. Caves can also use inlays and onlays to restore teeth that are cracked or fractured. We are one of the few dentist offices in Columbus, GA to offer same day treatment for dental inlays and onlays using advanced CEREC technology.
What Are Dental Inlays & Onlays?
Dental inlays and onlays are indirect restorations, meaning they are fabricated outside of the mouth and then bonded to the tooth. Dental inlays and onlays are a great alternative to traditional metal fillings, primarily because less of the tooth structure needs to be removed.
Inlays and onlays can be made from porcelain, gold or composite resin. Once fabricated, they are securely bonded to the tooth. In our Columbus, GA dentist office, we generally use CEREC technology to create the restoration in a single visit.
Inlay vs. Onlay
Generally, dental inlays are small restorations that fit within the contours of the biting surface of a tooth, while dental onlays cover a portion or the entire chewing surface.
Advantages of inlays and onlays:
- Since they can be fabricated from tooth-colored materials, inlays and onlays are aesthetically pleasing. Unlike traditional metal fillings, the restoration is virtually invisible.
- Less removal of the tooth structure is required to achieve optimal results.
- They do not cause excessive wear and tear to opposing tooth structures.
- Inlays and onlays prevent the need for more significant treatment in the future.
As with any dental treatment, a proper, daily hygiene regimen ensures the success and longevity of your new restoration.
